The short answer

The Quartet Infinity Magnetic Glass Dry Erase Board (48" x 36") is our top overall pick, and the reason is the surface. Tempered glass is non-porous, so it resists the ghosting and gray staining that ruin cheaper boards after a few months of daily use. It's magnetic (with the included high-powered glass magnets), carries a 15-year limited warranty, meets the GREENGUARD GOLD low-emissions standard, and mounts with a clean frameless pass-through system that suits a modern office. It isn't cheap, and glass is heavier to hang than steel, but if you write on it every day, this is the surface that ages best. "Best whiteboard" still depends on your budget and how hard you'll use the board. Below we explain the four surface materials that actually matter, melamine, painted steel, porcelain/ceramic, and tempered glass, then match six real, Amazon-sold boards to specific needs, from the budget VIZ-PRO to a heavy-duty porcelain XBoard. This guide is strictly physical dry-erase, not smart boards or whiteboard software.

Best for specific needs

Best whiteboards for every buyer

Best budget magnetic board

VIZ-PRO Magnetic Dry Erase Board (36" x 24")

A painted-steel magnetic surface in a silver aluminum frame with a detachable marker tray, it covers the essentials for a home office or dorm at an entry-level price. Painted steel ghosts faster than glass over years of heavy use, but for the money it's hard to beat.

Best for heavy daily use

XBoard Porcelain Magnetic Dry Erase Board (48" x 36")

The porcelain (ceramic-on-steel) surface is far more scratch- and ghost-resistant than painted steel or melamine, making it the most durable framed board here. It stays magnetic and comes with an aluminum frame and marker tray, so it's built for a board that gets written on all day.

Best frameless, minimalist look

U Brands Magnetic Glass Dry Erase Board (Frameless)

A frosted tempered-glass surface with no frame gives a clean floating look and lets you hang multiple panels side by side to expand your writing space. Just note it works only with high-energy neodymium magnets, not standard ones.

Editorial guidance based on surface-material characteristics and manufacturer specifications. No ghosting-longevity or erasability testing was performed; ghosting resistance varies with the marker type and erasing habits you use.

How we picked

How to Choose the Best whiteboards

Match the surface material to how hard you'll use the board. Melamine is cheapest but ghosts and stains fastest; painted steel is a magnetic mid-tier that ghosts more slowly; porcelain/ceramic-on-steel is far more durable and scratch-resistant; tempered glass never absorbs ink, so it resists ghosting best of all.
Decide whether you need a magnetic surface. Painted-steel, porcelain, and glass boards hold magnets (glass needs strong ones); plain melamine does not. Frameless glass boards like the U Brands only hold high-energy neodymium magnets, so ordinary fridge magnets will slide right off.
Size the board for the wall and the audience. Desktop notes work at 11x17, a home office or dorm suits 36x24, a shared team wall wants 48x36 or larger, and full-wall projects use multiple frameless panels hung side by side.
Plan the mount before you buy. Framed aluminum boards (VIZ-PRO, Amazon Basics, XBoard, Quartet Classic) use simple wall brackets and mount horizontally or vertically. Frameless glass (Quartet Infinity, U Brands) uses pass-through or standoff hardware and needs solid anchors because glass is heavy.
Prevent ghosting from the start. Use genuine dry-erase markers (never permanent), erase regularly rather than leaving writing up for weeks, and don't let a full board bake in direct sun. Habits matter more than the price of the board.
Know how to remove ghosting when it happens. Whiteboard cleaner or isopropyl alcohol lifts shadow marks from glass and porcelain safely; melamine is more delicate, so skip abrasive pads and harsh solvents that can wear the coating.
Check what accessories are included. Marker tray, starter markers, an eraser, magnets, and a mounting kit all vary by model, so read the listing before assuming the board arrives ready to write on.
Don't confuse physical whiteboards with digital ones. Smart boards and whiteboard apps are a separate, far pricier category. If you searched 'best whiteboard' wanting a wall board to write on with a marker, that's exactly what this guide covers.

Editor's Note — how we research

Every board in this guide was confirmed as a currently listed item on Amazon US at the time of writing, with model names and specifications cross-checked against manufacturer and retailer pages — for example, the Quartet Infinity's 15-year warranty, GREENGUARD Gold certification, magnetic tempered-glass surface, and pass-through frameless mounting are all stated on Quartet's official product page. No ghosting-longevity, erasability, or marker-compatibility testing was performed by KeenSift. Ghosting resistance depends heavily on the marker used, so always use dry-erase-specific markers and never permanent ink. Confirm current sizes, prices, and included accessories on the retailer page before buying.

Our Take

If you write on a board every day, the Quartet Infinity glass board is worth the premium — a non-porous magnetic glass surface backed by a 15-year warranty is the one that won't ghost on you within a year. Most people don't need to spend that much: the VIZ-PRO is the value magnetic pick for a home office, and the XBoard's porcelain surface is the smart middle ground when you want anti-ghost durability without glass weight or price. Reach for the Amazon Basics board only when you just need something functional on the wall cheaply, and the Quartet Classic melamine only for light, occasional use where magnets don't matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best whiteboard surface material?

Tempered glass and porcelain (ceramic-on-steel) are the best surfaces because they're non-porous and resist ghosting and staining, which is why our top pick, the Quartet Infinity, uses glass. Painted steel is a solid magnetic mid-tier, while melamine is the cheapest but ghosts and wears fastest. Choose glass or porcelain for daily heavy use and melamine only for light, occasional writing.

Do glass whiteboards ghost or stain?

Glass whiteboards resist ghosting and staining better than any other surface. Because tempered glass is non-porous, dry-erase ink sits on top of the surface instead of soaking in, so it wipes away completely even after months of daily writing — the main reason a glass board like the Quartet Infinity costs more than melamine. Leaving ink up for long stretches or using the wrong marker can still leave faint marks, but they lift easily with whiteboard cleaner or isopropyl alcohol.

Are magnetic whiteboards worth it?

If you want to post papers, photos, or notes on the board, yes — a magnetic surface lets you write and pin in the same space. Painted-steel (VIZ-PRO), porcelain (XBoard), and glass (Quartet Infinity, U Brands) boards all hold magnets, though glass needs strong neodymium magnets rather than ordinary fridge ones. Plain melamine boards like the Quartet Classic are non-magnetic, so skip them if magnet support matters.

How do I remove ghosting from a whiteboard?

For glass and porcelain boards, spray whiteboard cleaner or wipe with isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth to lift shadow marks, then buff dry. Melamine surfaces are more delicate, so avoid abrasive pads and harsh solvents that can wear the coating — use a dedicated whiteboard cleaner sparingly. To prevent ghosting in the first place, use genuine dry-erase markers, erase regularly instead of leaving writing up for weeks, and keep the board out of direct sun.
